What is Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome?
Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome (WTS) is a stress-related, usually reversible condition of the endocrine system, which includes the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and the rest of the body, but it most closely affects the thyroid.
What Causes Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome?
When you’re dealing with periods of intense stress, like a divorce, financial difficulty, childbirth, or the death of a loved one, your body goes through a number of different changes to help you cope. One of these changes is the slowing of your metabolism to save your energy.
Once the stress passes, your metabolism should return to normal. And usually it does, but not always. If your metabolism is stuck at a crawl, you’ll experience a low body temperature, hence the name Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome.
Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome mimics some of the symptoms of other thyroid conditions, and patients who suffer from Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome respond exceptionally well to certain thyroid treatments. But because thyroid tests almost always come back within normal range, Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and is often misdiagnosed.
In order to diagnose Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome in a patient who seems like they may be suffering from it, a good naturopathic doctor will rule out other ailments first. A careful examination of your health history will help Dr. Nardini determine the best course of treatment going forward.
