What is Graves’ Disease
Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition, which can affect the thyroid. In fact, it is a common issue to affect the thyroid.
When you suffer from Graves’ disease, your immune system ends up releasing antibodies which your body mistakenly reads as thyroid hormones. This causes an imbalance in your thyroid and in your endocrine system.
The imbalance in thyroid hormones caused by Graves’ disease triggers hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid becomes overactive and produces more thyroid hormones than is necessary. This kicks your metabolism into overdrive, which can result in sweating, trembling, weight loss, goiter (enlargement of the thyroid), and a pounding heart. You may also experience protruding eyeballs, though this is a less common symptom.
What are the symptoms of Graves’ disease?
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may be suffering from Graves’ disease:
- Unusual anxiety or irritability
- Difficulty sleeping
- Irregular or rapid heartbeat
- Fatigue or exhaustion
- Sensitivity to heat
- Goiter
- Sweating or trembling
- A pounding heart
- Sexual health issues
- Unusual weight loss
- Unusual bowel movements
What is Graves’ Disease Caused By?
When you suffer from Graves’ disease, your immune system ends up releasing hormones which confuse your thyroid, forcing it to work harder than it should and producing more thyroid hormone than your body needs. Why this happens is not yet clear, although stress levels and food sensitivities are often contributing factors.
Is Graves Disease Fatal?
If Graves’ disease is left untreated, your thyroid may begin producing hormones at a dangerously high rate, which can cause fatal heart failure.
